Lipstick

Lipstick

by Laura

A late Valentine’s Day watercolour painting I did while half-watching a film, as ya do. I seem to draw best while I have some film on in the background, though they become more like audiobooks to me. My family jokes that the test of a good film is whether I draw through it or not. It helps to give your eyes (and your brain) some kind of a break from staring intensely at a piece of paper every so often, so it works for me!

Lipstick is based on an editorial photo of Daphne Groeneveld by Txema Yeste for Harper’s Bazaar Spain, which I loved, but I wanted to bring more of a Schiaparelli feeling to it and make the lips stand out as being heart-shaped. In the end, it’s turned out very graphic and clean after using a limited colour palette and flat acrylic paint-like application.

As always, I’m on instagram and love to hear from you. Please feel free to send me suggestions for what to draw, because honestly I draw constantly and compulsively.

Let them have wifi

A fashion illustration based on Marie Antoinette, where everyone, including the extras, were the cool cats. I just love the juxtaposition between historical and modern, as I love a juxtaposition between traditional techniques and digital, which you can see an example in my tutorial for applying watercolour digitally.

Alexander McQueen F/W 2016 (details)

The Alexander McQueen F/W 2016 collection was an Erté influenced dream with a focus on adornment, making every model a nymph straight out of a fairytale. I particularly loved the wispy, dishevelled hairstyles with beautiful and elaborate pinned accessories. I painted a freestyle ink base to compliment the intricate details. The blindfold was my artistic license because I was getting a Highwaywoman feeling from how the sketch was going.

Ulyana Sergeenko Fall Couture 2016

Wow, January was a terrible month for me. I caught a virus which just didn’t seem to want to leave and ramped up the stakes into becoming a chest infection, and then I fell over and sprained my ankle! What a joy. After some antibiotics and ankle braces, though, I did a LOT of work because I couldn’t do much else, and am finally in the process of updating the site! Sneak peaks are on my instagram, as usual. Stay well, everyone. Eat your greens and stay warm and cosy!

This is my latest ilustration: the mod-inspired look from Ulyana Sergeenko’s fall collection from 2016. It has a lovely ‘Russia in the 60s’ X Bob Fosse’s Cabaret feel to it, so I had a lot of fun trying to capture the textures in this illustration using watercolours. Shiny helmets, satin trench coats, lurex, stockings and patent shoes are like catnip to me when illustrating, because there’s always a moment when I think: ‘How do I do this?!’ and have mild panic attacks over a pencil sketch. I always relish the opportunity to spatter masking fluid over a sketch in a very hedonistic, flamboyant way, however, and on this occasion it helped convey the metallic effect of the lurex body.
